A LIFETIME
IN ART
For more than four decades, Frances Crichton Stuart has developed a rich and varied artistic practice spanning painting, portraiture, illustration, textile art and Christian Coptic icon painting.
Born in Dublin in 1951 and raised on a historic estate in Scotland, Frances began drawing from life as a child. Those early sketches—and the precious childhood drawings kept by her mother—remain a source of inspiration today, alongside memories, personal experience and the Scottish landscape.
After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1976, Frances continued to develop her practice through studio work in New York and specialist study in London, Florence, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Her work has been exhibited across Scotland, London and France, including at the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
This breadth of experience has given Frances the freedom to work across styles and materials, united by an enduring interest in colour, memory, observation and what it means to be human.
CAREER
Throughout her career, Frances has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Scotland, London and France. Her solo shows have included exhibitions at Narrow Street, the Bartley Drey Gallery and The Turf Gallery in London; Galerie Art Témoin in Saint-Tropez; Galerie Sauver Bismuth in Paris; and Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery in Fife.
Her work has also appeared in prominent group exhibitions, including the John Player Portrait Exhibition at London’s National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Visual Arts Scotland and the Chelsea Arts Society.
Alongside her exhibition work, Frances has undertaken commissions in icon painting, portraiture and book illustration. Her career reflects a lifelong willingness to explore different disciplines while continuing to develop her own distinctive visual language.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM
Frances’ work has long been recognised for its craftsmanship, sensitivity and distinctive use of colour, mood and form.
The late art historian Professor Thomas Puttfarken described her paintings as possessing:
"...a deep and pervading sensitivity, a visual poetry that plays on nuances of mood, colour and form." An early review in Arts Review praised her work as:
"Technically superb... sensitive miniatures combining remarkable craftsmanship with a distinctly contemporary vision." Actor Sir Ian McKellen, a long-time collector of Frances' work, wrote: "Frances Crichton Stuart's oils are too precious. They remain where I first hung them twelve years ago. All of them are a daily delight."
TODAY
Today, Frances lives and works in Fife, Scotland, where a quiet rural studio has given her the freedom to paint what she wants, when she wants and however she wants.
Her daily walks with her dog, Domino, remain a constant source of inspiration-from wild geese and circling buzzards to Turneresque skies and moments of complete silence. Childhood drawings, old sketchbooks, memories and personal experiences also find their way into the work, transformed rather than told literally.
This period of newfound autonomy has brought greater freedom and play into Frances’ practice. She continues to experiment, wrestle with ideas and build layers of paint until each piece discovers its own distinct character. The result is work that balances humour, celebration and darkness while inviting viewers to find stories of their own.
